The body of migrant worker Riazul Islam Kadam (50) has finally returned to Bangladesh. His funeral and burial took place on Wednesday (19 November), six days after he fell to his death from a building under construction in Singapore.
Kadam was the son of the late Yusuf Ali Sheikh of Nuru Mondal Para, Daulatdia Union, Gopalganj Upazila, Rajbari.
Kadam’s brother-in-law, Quddus Alam, said Kadam worked as a construction labourer on the LTA project of Tevan Station and Construction Company in Singapore. On 13 November, at around 6:30 pm Bangladesh time, he fell while working on the second floor of a building under construction and died on the spot.
Kadam’s death has left his family devastated. He is survived by his wife Romisha Khatun Rina and their only daughter Hridi Islam, a student at North South University.
Forty days ago, Kadam’s younger brother Harun Sheikh passed away. The close succession of the two brothers’ deaths has cast a shadow of grief over the family and the community.
Kadam’s elder brother Mannan Sheikh said, “On the night of Tuesday (18 November), my brother’s body arrived from Singapore. A funeral was initially held in Singapore. Today at 10 am, a funeral will be held at our home, followed by another at Daulatdia Khanka Pak Darbar Sharif at 11 am, after which he will be buried.”
