Rumours Surrounding Mizanur Rahman Azhari’s Candidacy in Dhaka-5, Jamaat Denies

A widespread discussion arose on social media when news circulated that Dr. Mizanur Rahman Azhari, the popular Islamic speaker, had been nominated by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for the Dhaka-5 (Jatrabari-Demra) constituency in the upcoming national elections. However, multiple leaders from Jamaat have confirmed that this news is false and merely a rumour.

Ataur Rahman, a leader of Dhaka North Jamaat, told the media, “Our candidate for this seat has already been selected, and they are already working in the area. The information about Mizanur Rahman Azhari being nominated is incorrect.”

Abdus Sattar Suman, Assistant Propaganda Secretary of Dhaka South Jamaat, also confirmed the news to be “baseless.”

Additionally, Ehsan Mahbub Jubaer, the Assistant Secretary General and head of Jamaat’s Media Department, stated in the media that, “The news about Mizanur Rahman Azhari being nominated by Jamaat is a complete rumour. There is no possibility of such an event happening.” He also urged people to remain cautious about false information and not to accept political candidacies without proper verification.

Meanwhile, based on various posts on social media and informal campaigns since noon, many people have taken the news as true and have started congratulating Azhari.

However, Azhari has not yet commented on the matter.

The Dhaka-5 constituency is traditionally and politically significant. It is reported that the party’s policymakers are reconsidering the nomination of a new candidate for this seat in the upcoming elections. However, Kamal Hossain is currently campaigning as Jamaat’s candidate for the seat.

Meanwhile, in the 13th general elections, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has nominated Nabiullah Nabi for the Dhaka-5 seat.
