Government secondary school teachers have started a full-day strike from Monday, demanding the inclusion of assistant teacher posts in the BCS (General Education) cadre, prompt promotion and recruitment to vacant posts, approval of pending time scales, and continuation of enhanced salaries and benefits.
As part of the strike, ongoing annual exams have been suspended. The remaining examinations, which began on 24 November, will not be conducted until the authorities respond to the teachers’ demands.
The Bangladesh Government Secondary Teachers Association stated that if the government meets their demands, the teachers will hold the remaining exams on weekends and release results within December. Otherwise, the strike will continue.
In a press release, the association noted that teachers held a sit-in protest on Sunday over long-standing issues concerning professional status and pay. With their demands unmet, the teachers have now started continuous strike action.
