The deceased, identified as Sri Priya, was employed at a private firm in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. Her husband, Balamurugam, is a resident of Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The couple lived separately. Police primarily suspect that she was murdered over suspicion that the wife was having an extramarital affair.
A media report on Tuesday stated that Balamurugam brutally hacked his wife to death at a women’s hostel. He then took a selfie with his wife’s corpse.
Police reported that the suspect arrived at the hostel on Sunday afternoon. He had a machete concealed in his clothes and requested to meet with Sri Priya. A quarrel broke out between the two immediately after they met, which quickly turned violent. Balamurugam drew the hidden machete and hacked Sri Priya to death.
Police further stated that after the murder, he took a selfie with the body, shared it on his WhatsApp status, and accused her of ‘betrayal’. The incident caused panic and chaos at the hostel.
Following the brutal murder, the accused Balamurugam did not flee but remained at the crime scene. Police later arrived and arrested him from there. The weapon used in the murder was also recovered.
Preliminary investigation indicates that Balamurugam suspected his wife was involved in an illicit relationship with another man.
