A group of assailants entered a house in Chirla village under Joypurhat Sadar Upazila and beat a woman, Nurun Nahar Begum, to death. Her niece, Khadija Begum, was also severely injured in the attack. The incident occurred late on Tuesday night (2 December).
Fifty-year-old Nurun Nahar was the former wife of Abdul Gafur. Sixteen-year-old Khadija Begum, daughter of Abdul Matin, is a tenth-grade student at Pollibala Girls’ School.
According to locals, the attackers entered the house at night and assaulted the victims with iron rods. Both were taken towards Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital, but Nurun Nahar died on the way. Critically injured Khadija was later transferred to Bogura’s Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital.
Abdul Matin, the victim’s brother and father of injured Khadija, said he received a call from his younger brother’s wife around 3 am and rushed to the house, where he found his sister beaten to death with a tube-well handle and his daughter gravely injured.
Officer-in-Charge Nazmul Kader of Joypurhat Sadar Police Station said the post-mortem of Nurun Nahar is underway. Khadija is receiving treatment at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital. The reason behind the attack will be known after she recovers and gives a statement. No case has been filed yet, but the family is preparing to file one.
