England’s Dropped Catches Hand Australia a Record Lead

England endured a frustrating day as, despite scoring 334 in their first innings, Australia ended the day 44 runs ahead. Multiple dropped catches allowed the hosts to take firm control, with Australia recording the highest single-day total in a day-night Test.

England managed to add only 9 runs to their overnight score. Joe Root remained unbeaten on 138 off 206 balls, striking 15 fours and 1 six. After losing 9 wickets for 264, he forged a 70-run stand with Jofra Archer. Mitchell Starc claimed 6 wickets, the best figures for Australia.

Australia’s reply began strongly, with the opening stand reaching 77 before Head departed for 33 in the ninth over. Jake Weatherald and Marnus Labuschagne then added 69 runs, with Labuschagne scoring 65. They lost another wicket before lunch.

Cameron Green and Steve Smith consolidated with a 95-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Green was dismissed for 45, while Alex Carey survived a chance off Ben Duckett, only for Smith to fall in the very next delivery for 61.

England dropped three more catches, allowing Australia to strengthen their grip. Although Josh Inglis departed for 23, Carey and Neser put together an unbeaten 49-run stand to close the day. Australia finished on 378 for 6, posting the highest single-day total in a day-night Test. Combined, both teams scored 387 runs today, setting another record.
