Police have identified the woman whose body with gouged eyes was recovered from a banana plantation in the Kashiahata Nalichapara area of Sirajganj Sadar and arrested a suspect in connection with the murder.
The arrested man is Mohammad Sohel Rana, 35. The deceased was identified as Mosammat Mariam Begum, 48, a resident of Khoksabari area under the Sadar upazila.
The information was confirmed on Monday (8 December) at a press conference at Sirajganj Sadar Police Station by Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Najran Rauf. He said Mariam had been living abroad and had been in a relationship with Sohel for the past two to three years. Sohel reportedly pressured her to marry him, but when she asked for time, distance grew between them and she allegedly became involved elsewhere.
Police said the two met in the Kashiahata area on 5 December, where an argument broke out and Sohel strangled Mariam before dumping her body in a drain of a banana plantation. Using information technology, police arrested Sohel within about eight hours. The victim’s son, Manik Hossain, filed a case with Sadar Police Station.
