BNP Candidate Threatened With Obscene Image Scandal

A fresh controversy has emerged in Bogura as Mosharraf Hossain, the BNP’s nominated parliamentary candidate for Bogura-4 (Nandigram–Kahaloo), has reportedly been threatened with the creation and viral circulation of AI-generated obscene images on Facebook. The threats, described as part of an orchestrated attempt to tarnish his public reputation, prompted the filing of a General Diary (GD) at Bogura Sadar Police Station. The duty officer, SI Md Mehedi Hasan, confirmed the filing.

The GD was lodged late Monday night by Abdul Momin, son of BNP leader Lutfur Rahman of Narhatt, Doyanipara, and the organisational secretary of Kahaloo Upazila BNP, on behalf of Mosharraf Hossain.

Details Mentioned in the General Diary

According to the GD, Mosharraf Hossain—former MP of Bogura-4 and currently the acting General Secretary of Bogura District BNP—has long enjoyed a reputation as a respected political figure in the region. For months, however, several unidentified individuals have reportedly created fake Facebook accounts to run a smear campaign against him.

The matter escalated on Monday, 8 December, at 9:46 AM, when an unknown foreign number, +1 (916) 477-5662, contacted Mosharraf via WhatsApp at his residence in Bogura Sadar’s Upashahar area. The anonymous sender allegedly demanded immoral financial favours, threatening that failure to comply would lead to the release of fabricated obscene images created through advanced AI technology.

The sender warned that these manipulated images would be circulated widely across Facebook and other social platforms to damage the politician’s reputation.

Political Context and Candidate’s Reaction

Mosharraf Hossain, speaking to Dainik Karatoa, said that he has had to confront “one conspiracy after another” as the election draws nearer. He claimed that the overwhelming grassroots support for the BNP’s election symbol ‘Dhaner Shish’ (Sheaf of Paddy) has created panic among those plotting against him.

“These conspirators are desperate,” he said. “They want to mislead voters with misinformation spread across social media. Now they are using AI technology to threaten me with obscene image fabrication and demanding over one crore taka in extortion.”

He further stated that the primary objective behind these threats is to socially humiliate him, damage his standing within the community and divert voters ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

A Growing Trend of AI-Driven Political Smear Campaigns

Law enforcement sources indicate that such threats—leveraging AI-generated deepfakes—are becoming increasingly common as the election season intensifies. Investigators are currently attempting to trace the source of the foreign number and determine whether an organised political group is behind the intimidation attempt.

Police officials say they are taking the matter seriously, acknowledging the possibility of coordinated efforts to digitally sabotage political candidates.

For now, the investigation continues, while the BNP candidate urges voters not to be misled by fabricated online content.
