A former market association president and spice trader, Abdur Rahman (55), was shot dead in broad daylight in the Shyambazar area of Sutrapur in Old Dhaka. The incident occurred on Thursday, 11 December, shortly after midday. Abdur Rahman, who previously served as president of the Shyambazar Kachabazar Owners’ Association, was attacked in front of the Maula Box Eye Hospital when unidentified assailants opened fire on him.
According to local accounts, the shooting took place around 12 pm. Residents rushed to his aid and took him to the emergency department of Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival. The sudden killing has sent shockwaves through the community, particularly among traders who regarded him as a well-known and respected businessman in the area.
Family members stated that Abdur Rahman had hurriedly left home after lunch at around quarter to twelve. A short while later, locals heard a loud bang. Initially, his family thought the noise might have come from a transmitter explosion. However, within minutes, they received a phone call informing them that Abdur Rahman had been shot. The family has expressed suspicion towards an individual named Nayan. A relative said that many locals had seen Nayan fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. They have demanded a proper investigation and justice if he is found to be involved.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Motiur Rahman of Sutrapur Police Station confirmed the incident to গণমাধ্যম, stating that Abdur Rahman had been shot near the Maula Box Eye Hospital around noon. Police were dispatched to both the crime scene and the hospital as the investigation began. He added that Abdur Rahman was a resident of Shyambazar and a former president of the Kachabazar Owners’ Association. Police are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the killing.
Following the incident, the neighbourhood has been gripped by grief and heightened anxiety. Traders and residents have voiced concerns over safety after the sudden loss of a familiar community figure. Police have deployed additional patrols in the area to maintain order and ensure public reassurance. Locals have also cordoned off the scene and are assisting officers with the initial inquiry.
Authorities have pledged that the perpetrators will be swiftly identified and brought to justice. The murder has intensified local fears, adding urgency to the investigation.
The film will be released in two phases: selected cinemas in the UK and US on 12 December 2025, followed by a Netflix release on 24 December, just before Christmas. This emotionally rich, family-centred story is especially timely, offering audiences a close exploration of familial distance, emotional complexity, and the fragile bonds that hold relationships together. It promises to resonate deeply with contemporary viewers.
