Tragic Discovery of Missing Child in Narsingdi

A profound sense of grief has engulfed the close-knit community of Sonabaluya in Raipura Upazila, Narsingdi, following the harrowing discovery of a young boy’s body. On Saturday morning, the lifeless body of eight-year-old Sayem Mia, who had gone missing the previous Friday, was recovered from a pond adjacent to his family home. Local residents reported that the grim discovery was made at around 10 a.m., following an extensive search involving the child’s family and neighbours.

Sayem, a bright and cheerful pupil of the first grade at Bāchchādēr Agrani Alor Porosh Kindergarten, also attended private tuition classes. According to family sources, he returned home from tuition on Friday morning before leaving the house again, leaving behind his school bag, notebooks, and writing materials. Despite an exhaustive search extending into the evening and night, no trace of the boy was found, leaving his family and the surrounding community deeply anxious and fearful.

The local community immediately launched a widespread search operation. Loud announcements were made to alert neighbouring households and solicit assistance. During the search, a single child’s shoe was discovered on the edge of the pond, heightening the anxiety and dread among those involved. On Saturday morning, with the aid of neighbours, the search extended into the pond itself, and at approximately 10 a.m., Sayem’s body was found submerged in the water.

Sayem’s uncle, Shamim Mia, told journalists: “As soon as the shoe was discovered at the water’s edge, his mother feared the worst. We all began searching the pond and, heartbreakingly, found Sayem there.”

The police have confirmed the incident and the boy’s body has been sent to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examination. An official investigation has been launched, with authorities interviewing family members and neighbours to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

The tragedy has left the entire community in shock and mourning. Many residents have expressed their condolences to the bereaved family while calling on the local authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation. The incident has also reignited urgent discussions about child safety and the collective responsibility of society to protect its youngest members. Community leaders emphasise that safeguarding children is a duty that falls on every level of society.
