BPL Fever Grips Mirpur as Players Intensify Preparations

After wrapping up his training session, Akbar Ali was just leaving the academy grounds when spinner Naeem Hasan called out to him from a distance. In jest, Naeem gave Akbar a mock ‘salute’, prompting the young wicketkeeper-batsman to stride over laughing. What began as a light-hearted exchange quickly turned into an engaging conversation, filled with anecdotes and friendly banter between the two teammates.

Shortly thereafter, Ripon Mondol was spotted standing beside his car. Fresh from a dazzling performance at the Asia Cup Rising Stars, Ripon was waiting for his teammate Mehrab Hossain. Once Mehrab arrived, the pair set off for their Rajshahi Warriors team hotel, ready to continue their preparations.

Meanwhile, pacer Nahid Rana emerged from the academy building shortly after. Spotted in his national team training jersey, a journalist quipped, “Your BPL debut hasn’t even begun yet!” Smiling, Nahid replied, “Just a few more hours…” before hopping into a Rangpur Riders car, en route to join the franchise’s training session at Basundhara Sports Complex.

Throughout the day, Mirpur buzzed with activity, giving fans glimpses of the BPL excitement ahead. Two days prior, Rajshahi Warriors had been the first squad to begin practice, while on this day, Dhaka Capitals, Rangpur Riders, and Sylhet Titans hit the nets.

Despite controversies and lingering concerns, the BPL is set to commence on 26 December in Sylhet. Sylhet Titans began their practice sessions yesterday, while the remaining teams continue training in Dhaka. The tournament’s opening match will see Sylhet face Rajshahi at 3 pm, followed by Chattogram taking on newcomers Noakhali at 8 pm.

Plans for the following day include travel to Sylhet for all four teams, with most overseas players joining their squads there. Tickets for the first day’s matches sold out in just two hours, with 50% of the allocation already snapped up.

Players have also shared their ambitions and strategies for the tournament. Akbar Ali, the standout performer in the recent NCL T20 with 222 runs in 8 matches, stated, “I will give my utmost whenever I get a chance. I aim to maintain the mindset I carried throughout the NCL.”

Nahid Rana, who rose to prominence after the National Cricket League, promised to showcase new skills and maintain consistency, saying, “I’ll try to implement the new techniques I’ve been working on while keeping the momentum from previous seasons.”

Meanwhile, Mohammad Mithun, who led Chattogram Kings to last season’s final, will captain Dhaka Capitals this year. On being announced as skipper, he emphasised, “The start is crucial. The sooner we gel as a team, the better prepared we’ll be for the challenges ahead.”
