False Claims of Shironamhin Concert Cancellation

Renowned Bangladeshi band Shironamhin was scheduled to perform at the cultural programme of the second convocation of Barendra University in Rajshahi. However, on Saturday, 20 December, the university administration suddenly announced the cancellation of the event, citing security concerns. This unexpected decision quickly sparked rumours among media outlets and attendees, suggesting that the band had deliberately withdrawn from the concert—a claim Shironamhin has strongly refuted.

On 21 December, the band took to their official Facebook page to clarify the situation, emphasising that all preparations for the concert had been completed well in advance, and that 30% of their performance fee had already been received as per the contract.

A statement issued by the band read:
“Late last night, around 9 pm, we were informed that, considering the overall situation in the country, the administration could not guarantee adequate security. Consequently, the cultural programme of the second convocation was cancelled.”

Shironamhin also stressed that, as the event was organised by the university itself, they were ready and willing to perform, even if full payment had not been received. It is noteworthy that, in respect of National Mourning Day, the band had previously postponed another performance scheduled at Rajshahi State University on 20 December, moving it to 21 December.

The band concluded their statement by expressing heartfelt regret:
“We share the disappointment of students and guests due to the abrupt cancellation and acknowledge the financial loss incurred. However, any suggestion that Shironamhin intentionally refused to perform is entirely unfounded.”

The cultural programme was also set to feature a performance by popular singer Porshi. Yet, due to security concerns, the entire event had to be called off. Both the university administration and the band emphasised that the decision was not taken by any party deliberately; it was solely aimed at ensuring the safety of all attendees.

While the sudden cancellation understandably disappointed students and guests, the university has assured that future events will involve stricter security measures and better coordination to prevent similar occurrences. Shironamhin, meanwhile, remains committed to performing whenever possible and continues to enjoy widespread respect for their professionalism and dedication.
