In a significant crackdown on cross-border crime, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has confiscated a substantial haul of smuggled goods, including narcotics and contraband, across various border points in Kurigram. The operation also led to the arrest of one alleged smuggler, with the estimated market value of the seized items reaching approximately BDT 3.5 million.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Mahbub-ul-Haq, PSC, commanding officer of the Kurigram Battalion (22 BGB), confirmed the details of the operation on Monday, 22 December. According to the BGB, the intensive special operation, conducted over the past 72 hours, resulted in the seizure of a wide range of illegal items, including yaba tablets, alcohol, cannabis, livestock, Indian currency, and other smuggled goods originating from India.
The Kurigram Battalion has reiterated its commitment to the ‘zero tolerance’ policy mandated by the BGB headquarters, aimed at preventing drugs, counterfeit currency, and all forms of smuggling along the border.
Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub-ul-Haq emphasised that the BGB’s efforts go beyond seizures, stating:
“Our personnel carry out regular patrols to maintain law and order, prevent acts of sabotage, and ensure the security of sensitive and strategic areas. Along the border, BGB officers work tirelessly with the highest levels of vigilance, skill, and professionalism to prevent drug trafficking, smuggling, and all forms of illegal crossings.”
The seizure underscores the ongoing challenges faced by border security forces in combating illicit trade, which not only undermines law and order but also poses serious economic and social risks. Operations like these highlight the BGB’s proactive approach in safeguarding national security and curbing criminal activities in border regions.
