JASAS Leader Allegedly Hacked to Death in Gazipur, Six Detained

A senior local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Social and Cultural Organisation (JASAS) has been allegedly hacked to death in Gazipur’s Sripur upazila, sparking tension and concern across the area. Police have detained six individuals for questioning in connection with the killing, which is believed to be linked to a long-running land dispute.

The incident occurred at around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday night in Latifpur village, under Gosinga Union of Sripur upazila. The deceased has been identified as Farid Sarkar (35), son of Jamal Uddin of Narayanpur village. Farid Sarkar served as the Senior Joint Secretary of the Gosinga Union unit of JASAS, an affiliate organisation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

According to family members, Farid had been embroiled in a prolonged land dispute with neighbours Anwar Hossain and Md Motahar. The disagreement had reportedly escalated over time, with the family allegedly receiving repeated threats. Relatives claim that a General Diary (GD) had previously been filed with Sripur Police Station, warning of potential danger.

Speaking to journalists, the victim’s relative Shakil Hasan Morol stated that the murder was a direct consequence of the land conflict. “They had been threatening us for a long time. Despite informing the police earlier, the situation continued to worsen,” he said. Farid’s father, Jamal Uddin, echoed the claim, adding that the family had been living in constant fear due to the ongoing hostility with their neighbours.

Family sources revealed that on the night of the incident, Farid left home after dinner, saying he was heading towards a nearby brick kiln. When he failed to return and his mobile phone remained unreachable, concern grew among relatives. Later, a local Union Parishad member reportedly found Farid lying critically injured near the brick kiln, bearing severe wounds. The family rushed him towards hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.

Police confirmed that the victim sustained multiple sharp-weapon injuries to his head and hands, suggesting a brutal attack. The body has been sent to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sripur Police Station, Md Nasir Ahmed, said police had already visited the scene and launched a formal investigation. “We are taking this incident very seriously. Legal proceedings are underway, and six individuals have been detained for interrogation. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation,” he told The Daily Star.

Local residents have demanded swift justice, expressing concern over rising violence linked to land disputes in the area. Law enforcement authorities have assured that those responsible will be brought to justice following a thorough and impartial investigation.
