Six More Arrested in Deepu Murder Case

In Mymensingh’s Bhaluka, police have apprehended six additional suspects in connection with the brutal killing of 28-year-old Deepu Chandra Das, who was beaten to death over allegations of religious defamation and later burned. This brings the total number of arrested individuals in the case to 18. The newly arrested suspects reportedly coerced Deepu into resigning from his job prior to his death.

The information was disclosed on Thursday, 25 December, via a press release issued by the Mymensingh District Police Office. The six new arrestees are:

Name Age Hometown/Area
Takbir 22 Sunamganj
Ruhul Amin 42 Thakurgaon
Nur Alam 33 Mymensingh Sadar
Md. Shamim Mia 28 Tarakanda
Selim Mia 22 Noakhali
Md. Masum Khalashi Madaripur

Earlier, police had arrested twelve others involved in the case: Ashikur Rahman (25), Kaiyum (25), Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nizum Uddin (20), Alamgir Hossain (38), Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46), Md. Azmal Hasan Sagir (26), Md. Shahin Mia (19), and Md. Nazmul (21).

The case was initially filed on 19 December by Deepu’s younger brother, Apu Chandra Das, who named approximately 150 unidentified individuals as suspects at Bhaluka Police Station. Subsequent investigations and operations conducted by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and local police led to the arrest of a total of 18 suspects implicated in the murder.

Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Superintendent of Police (Finance & Administration) of Mymensingh, stated that the six recently arrested individuals incited employees inside the factory, led slogans, and forced workers outside, pressuring Deepu to resign. Authorities are investigating why Deepu was handed over to a mob instead of being protected by the police. Operations to apprehend remaining suspects are ongoing.

The incident occurred on the night of 18 December at Pioneer Knitwears BD Limited, located in Jamirdia, Bhaluka. Following accusations of religious defamation, Deepu was publicly beaten. His body was subsequently taken to the side of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway and set on fire. Police recovered the partially burned body around 2:30 a.m. and sent it for post-mortem examination.

The case has sparked widespread outrage across Mymensingh and beyond, prompting calls for swift justice and stronger measures to prevent mob violence.
