Three Women Killed in Gazipur Train Accident

A tragic railway accident in Gazipur’s Kaliganj Upazila has claimed the lives of three women after they were struck by a passing train on Thursday afternoon, 25 December. The incident occurred in the Tekpara area, located to the eastern side of Arikhola Railway Station, leaving the local community in deep shock and mourning.

The deceased have been identified as Kamala Begum (55), a resident of Marjal village in Shibpur Upazila of Narsingdi district; her granddaughter, Anadi Akter (13), daughter of Babu Mia from Dewalertek area under Kaliganj Municipality; and their neighbour, Sadia Begum (24), wife of Mobarak Hossain. The victims belonged to the same locality and were reportedly travelling together at the time of the incident.

According to police and local sources, the Noakhali-bound Upakul Express train, which had departed from Dhaka, was passing through Arikhola Railway Station at approximately 5:00 pm. During this time, the grandmother, her granddaughter, and their neighbour were walking along the railway tracks. Due to a moment of inattention, they were unable to move out of the train’s path in time, resulting in the fatal accident.

Kamala Begum and Sadia Begum died instantly at the scene. Anadi Akter sustained critical injuries and was promptly rescued by local residents, who rushed her to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. Despite efforts by medical staff, the young girl was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Upon receiving the report, members of the Narsingdi Railway Police outpost arrived at the scene and carried out the necessary legal procedures. Sub-Inspector Dilip Chandra Sarkar confirmed that inquests were completed at the site. Following appeals from the bereaved families and with permission from senior authorities, the bodies were handed over without post-mortem examinations.

Local residents expressed grief over the loss and raised concerns regarding pedestrian safety near the railway line. They noted that people frequently use the tracks as a walking route due to the lack of alternative pathways, warning signs, and protective barriers. Community members have urged the railway authorities to take immediate preventive measures to reduce the risk of future accidents.

This heartbreaking incident once again highlights the importance of public awareness, infrastructural safety, and vigilance around railway tracks, particularly in densely populated areas.
