Security concerns have resurfaced along the Lalmonirhat border following the arrest of a former student political leader during a predawn operation conducted by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). The detainee, identified as Atik Hasan, 25, a former local leader of Islami Chhatra Shibir, was apprehended with a locally made sharp weapon during a routine patrol in the Patgram border area.
According to BGB officials, the arrest took place early on Saturday, 27 December, when a patrol team from the Poyshottibari Border Outpost (BOP), operating under the Teesta Battalion, launched a targeted operation based on suspicious activity near the international boundary. The patrol reportedly spotted several individuals loitering inside Bangladeshi territory near the main border pillar in the Auliar Hat area. When challenged, two individuals fled the scene, while Atik Hasan was detained.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of a locally manufactured sharp knife and a motorcycle from Atik Hasan’s possession. Security officials have stated that the items were seized as evidence, and preliminary suspicion points towards possible involvement in cross-border smuggling activities, a persistent concern in the region.
Atik Hasan is a resident of the Borderpara area of Patgram and the son of Bazlar Rahman. He previously served as president of the Patgram Police Station West Unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir. However, political leaders from the organisation have been quick to distance themselves from the accused. Sohel Rana, Ameer of the Patgram Municipal Unit, confirmed that Atik Hasan had been expelled from the organisation earlier for breaching party discipline and currently holds no organisational affiliation.
Local sources claim that the arrest occurred while Atik Hasan was attempting to cross the Shrirampur border route, an area often flagged by law enforcement agencies for illegal cross-border trade. While this allegation is still under investigation, authorities have stated that smuggling-related charges are being examined alongside existing legal provisions.
The two individuals who escaped during the operation were later identified as Md Zulfiqar Ali and Md Rahidul. BGB officials said efforts are underway to trace their full identities and whereabouts. “Legal action will be taken once they are apprehended,” a BGB spokesperson said, adding that border surveillance has been intensified in the area following the incident.
Following the arrest, BGB filed a formal case against Atik Hasan under relevant arms and security laws and handed him over to Patgram Police Station for further legal proceedings. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazmul Haque confirmed that the accused would be sent to Lalmonirhat District Jail after completion of necessary formalities.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict vigilance along the border to prevent illegal activities and ensure public safety.
