Mother and Son Fatally Struck by Train in Bogura

A tragic incident unfolded in Sonatala Upazila of Bogura district on Sunday morning, when a mother and her young son were fatally struck by a train. Police have indicated that the deaths are currently being treated as a suspected case of suicide, though investigations are ongoing to determine the precise circumstances.

Sub-Inspector Shariful Islam of Sonatala Police Station reported that the incident occurred at approximately 9:30 am in the Chhoyghoria area of Sonatala town. The victims have been identified as Roni Begum, aged 30, and her eight-year-old son, Arafat, both residents of Doyail village in Gobindganj Upazila.

According to police and eyewitness reports, Roni Begum was walking with her son towards Sonatala when they were seen standing on the railway tracks. A local resident attempted to intervene and move them to safety. Unfortunately, within minutes, the Padmarag train bound for Santahar–Lalmonirhat struck the pair, killing them instantly. The resident who tried to assist them was injured during the rescue attempt.

Sub-Inspector Islam said, “At this stage, our preliminary assessment suggests that this may have been an intentional act. However, the investigation is ongoing, and the exact cause of death will only be determined following a full forensic examination.”

Eyewitnesses noted that the mother and child had appeared unusually distressed in the days leading up to the incident. Locals expressed their shock, saying, “The community is deeply saddened. Losing both a mother and her child in this way is devastating.”

The incident has also highlighted the risks associated with railway tracks in semi-urban and rural areas, as well as the urgent need to address mental health challenges. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, particularly in areas close to active railway lines.
