Young Man Arrested in Gopalganj with Homemade Single-Shot Gun

In a decisive move against illegal firearms, the Gopalganj Detective Branch (DB) conducted an operation that led to the arrest of Sharif Touhidul Haque, 48, who was found in possession of a homemade single-shot gun. The arrest took place on Tuesday, 30 December, at approximately 9 pm in the Sharifpara area of Mari Gopinathpur village in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila.

The arrested man is the son of the late Sharif A. Haque and is a resident of the same village. According to Sub-Inspector Md. Faruk Alam of the Gopalganj DB, authorities had received confidential information suggesting that Sharif Touhidul Haque possessed an illegal firearm. “Based on this intelligence, we conducted a targeted operation in the area, which successfully led to the seizure of the weapon,” SI Alam stated.

The weapon in question is a homemade iron single-shot gun, with an estimated barrel and stock length of approximately 9 inches. The authorities believe the firearm could fetch around 50,000 Bangladeshi Taka in the market, highlighting the potential risk posed by such illicit weapons.

Following the arrest, a case was formally filed at the Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, and the suspect was subsequently sent to jail through the local court on Wednesday afternoon. Police officials emphasised that such operations are crucial in curbing the circulation of illegal firearms and maintaining community safety.

Local residents expressed relief at the arrest, noting that incidents involving weapons are rare in the area, but even a single illegal firearm can pose significant threats.
