Police Inspector Seriously Injured in Khulna Machete Attack

A police inspector was seriously injured in a robbery in Khulna city after three alleged muggers intercepted his rickshaw, stole his cash and mobile phone, and attacked him with a machete early on Friday.

The incident took place at around 2.30 am on 9 October in front of Collegiate School on a main road in the jurisdiction of Khulna Sadar Police Station.

The injured officer, Shah Alam, 43, is an unarmed police inspector working at the A-Circle office of Khulna district police. He is the son of Moshiyar Rahman.

According to police, Shah Alam was returning by rickshaw towards the Police Club after completing a special operation in the Rupsha Police Station area of Khulna district. On the way, three alleged muggers stopped his rickshaw and demanded his belongings.

The assailants took his cash and mobile phone before striking both his wrists with a sharp machete. They then fled the scene, leaving the officer seriously injured.

Following the incident, Shah Alam was rescued with assistance from Khulna Sadar Police Station’s officer-in-charge, Lokman Hossain, and a mobile team from Sonadanga Police Station.

He was initially taken to a private hospital in the city. Given the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for further treatment.

He was admitted to wards 11 and 12 of the hospital’s surgery department at 4.15 am on Friday in a serious condition. Doctors assessed the injuries to both wrists and advised that he be transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

He was later taken towards Dhaka in a government ambulance operated by the police.

Lokman Hossain, officer-in-charge of Khulna Sadar Police Station, confirmed the incident.

The attack has raised concerns about the safety of people travelling on city roads during the early hours of the morning. The use of a sharp weapon during a robbery also highlights the risks posed by violent street crime, particularly when victims are confronted by multiple assailants.

However, details about the identities of the three alleged attackers, their whereabouts and whether any arrests have been made were not available in the initial report. No further information was provided about any formal investigation or additional security measures following the incident.

The immediate priority remains the injured inspector’s treatment. Identifying those responsible and establishing the circumstances of the attack will be crucial to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
