Oscar-winning composer and musician A.R. Rahman is set to step into an entirely new arena: acting. The legendary Indian composer, renowned for his work across Bollywood, South Indian cinema, and Hollywood, will make his acting debut in the Tamil film “Munwaak”, starring alongside the iconic dancer and actor Prabhu Deva.
Rahman’s reputation as a singer, composer, and music director is globally celebrated. From the Indian subcontinent to Hollywood, his melodies have touched millions. Despite currently overseeing the music for over fifteen films, Rahman is now taking on a completely new role, this time appearing as a full-fledged actor. Although he has appeared in a few music videos before, he has never portrayed a full-length character on the big screen. The announcement has sparked immense excitement among fans and cinephiles alike.
“Munwaak” is a comedy-drama with a strong emphasis on dance, befitting the presence of Prabhu Deva, often hailed as India’s “Michael Jackson.” The film is directed by Manoj Nirmala Shridharan and produced under the banner of Behind Woods Production. A significant portion of the movie will feature dance sequences, capitalising on Prabhu Deva’s extraordinary choreography skills.
Rahman and Prabhu Deva share a longstanding friendship and have collaborated on numerous musical projects over the years. The director has hinted that it was this close bond that convinced Rahman to take on the acting role, adding a personal touch to the film.
In “Munwaak,” Rahman plays a film director named A.R. Rahman—a cinematic alter ego rather than his real-life persona as a music composer. The director revealed that Rahman agreed to the role immediately after hearing about the character during a song recording session. He also teased that the film contains several unexpected scenes designed to surprise the audience.
Beyond acting, Rahman has also composed the film’s music. Notably, he has sung all five songs featured in the movie himself, marking the first time in his career that he has performed an entire soundtrack single-handedly. A substantial part of the film’s shooting has already been completed, with the remaining scenes scheduled to be filmed before the release.
If all goes to plan, “Munwaak” is expected to premiere in May 2026, marking Rahman’s official debut as a film actor. Fans are eagerly anticipating to see whether the maestro of music will captivate audiences in front of the camera as convincingly as he has behind it.
