Journalist and Businessman Brutally Executed in Jashore

A wave of profound shock and terror has swept through the Monirampur Upadhyay of Jashore following the cold-blooded execution of a local businessman and media professional. On Monday evening, Rana Pratap Bairagi, a 38-year-old entrepreneur who also served as the acting editor of the Narail-based newspaper Dainik BD Khobor, was lured from his place of work and murdered in broad daylight. The sheer brutality of the attack, involving both firearms and a bladed weapon, has left the community in the Kapalia Bazaar area reeling as law enforcement agencies scramble to identify the perpetrators.

According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary police reports, the incident unfolded at approximately 5:45 PM. Mr Bairagi was present at his ice factory—a well-known establishment in Kapalia Bazaar—when three unidentified assailants arrived on a single motorcycle. The trio reportedly called him out of the facility, leading him toward a narrow alleyway in front of the Kapalia Clinic and Diagnostic Centre on the western periphery of the market. Once secluded from the main thoroughfare, the attackers opened fire at point-blank range before using a sharp weapon to slit his throat, ensuring he had no chance of survival. The culprits fled the scene immediately, disappearing before the local shopkeepers could intervene.

Monirampur Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC), Md. Rajiullah Khan, confirmed the harrowing details of the assault, noting that the victim had been shot three times in the head. The scene was quickly cordoned off by police units, and arrangements were made to transport the body to the Jashore 250-bed General Hospital morgue for a formal post-mortem examination. While the motive remains a mystery, police records indicate that the deceased had several legal entanglements, including three cases filed in Keshabpur and one in Abhaynagar. Authorities are currently investigating whether these prior disputes or his journalistic endeavours played a role in the assassination.
