The celebrated South Indian actor and politician, Thalapathy Vijay, is facing a turbulent period as he prepares to appear before India’s premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in connection with a tragic incident at one of his political rallies.
Vijay, who leads the nascent political party Tamilaga Vetrikazagam (TVK), has been summoned to the CBI headquarters on Monday, 12 January, to provide his statement regarding the catastrophic crowd crush that occurred during the party’s inaugural large-scale rally.
The rally, held on 27 September in Karur, Tamil Nadu, drew a massive crowd eager to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician. Police and organisers struggled to manage the overwhelming turnout. In a devastating turn of events, a stampede ensued, resulting in the deaths of 41 people, including women and children, and leaving over a hundred others critically injured.
The scale of the tragedy, coupled with apparent lapses in crowd management and security, quickly drew the attention of India’s Supreme Court. In October, the apex court took cognisance of the incident and entrusted the CBI with a thorough investigation. The bench, comprising Justices J.K. Maheshwari and N.V. Anjarier, highlighted the need to ascertain accountability and prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
To ensure the investigation’s integrity, a high-level committee has been formed under the leadership of retired Supreme Court judge Ajay Rastogi. The three-member panel also includes two senior and experienced IPS officers tasked with closely monitoring the probe.
The CBI is expected to examine the organisational deficiencies during the rally, scrutinise security arrangements, and determine the extent of responsibility of Vijay and his party as organisers. This marks a significant challenge for the actor-politician, whose political career has only recently begun. The upcoming interrogation will require him to clarify his position and cooperate fully with the investigative process.
The following table summarises key details of the incident and ongoing investigation:
