“Died in a road accident seven days before the wedding.”

Chattogram, 9 January 2026 – A sombre shadow has fallen over Anwara Upazila in Chattogram following the tragic death of a young man in a road accident, just a week before he was due to wed. The incident occurred on Friday morning on the Patiya-Anwara-Banshkhali (PAB) Road, near Fazilkhar’s Haat in neighbouring Karnaphuli Upazila, leaving the local community in profound grief.

The deceased has been identified as Md. Ali Abbas, aged 28, a resident of Jhiori village, Ward No. 1, Barkhain Union, Anwara Upazila. He was the son of Md. Musha and a member of the Golam Sharif family.

According to local sources, Ali Abbas had travelled to Chattogram city on Thursday evening to attend a relative’s invitation. Returning home on his motorcycle the following morning, he was struck by a car at approximately 7:00 a.m. near Fazilkhar’s Haat. The impact was fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His wedding, scheduled for the coming Friday, now stands as a heartrending reminder of the fragility of life.

In an emotional statement, Ali Abbas’s elder brother, Ali Akbar, told Prothom Alo that tragedy had already visited their family. “Last year, on 30 March, I, along with my wife and child, were involved in a motorcycle accident. My wife passed away in that accident. Now, barely a year later, we have lost my brother in a similar tragedy,” he said, visibly distressed.

Karnaphuli Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Shahinur Zaman, confirmed that the body had been recovered from the scene and sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. He added that efforts were ongoing to identify the vehicle involved in the collision.

The accident has sent shockwaves through the community, with neighbours and relatives mourning the untimely loss of a young life filled with promise and joy. The incident underscores the persistent risks faced by motorcyclists on busy highways and has renewed calls for greater road safety measures in the region.
