Trump Warns Cuba: Sign The Deal or Face Consequences

US President Donald Trump has escalated economic and diplomatic pressure on Cuba by announcing a complete suspension of Venezuelan oil and financial shipments to the island nation. In a stern warning, he urged the socialist-led government to reach an agreement with Washington promptly, cautioning that failure to do so could result in severe economic and political consequences for Cuba.

Venezuela has long been Cuba’s primary supplier of oil, but since the US military operation on 3 January 2026, which led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, all Venezuelan oil shipments to Cuba have been halted. On 11 January, Trump posted on his social media platform ‘Truth Social’, stating: “Venezuelan oil and financial flows to Cuba are now completely stopped. Cuba must seize this opportunity and reach a deal with us quickly.”

According to Trump, Cuba has historically relied heavily on Venezuelan oil and funds, in exchange for providing security services to Venezuelan leaders—a practice that is no longer feasible.
