Elderly Indonesian Man Spends 2 Crore BDT on Bride

A sensational tale of romance and controversy has emerged from Indonesia, where a 74-year-old man named Tarman has reportedly spent a staggering 2 crore BDT (approximately 2.6 billion Indonesian Rupiah) to secure a marriage with a 24-year-old woman. The union, defined by a 50-year age gap, has ignited a firestorm of debate across Southeast Asian social media and has been featured prominently in international outlets such as the South China Morning Post.

The High Price of Matrimony

In many Indonesian cultures, the tradition of Mahar or “Bride Price” is a standard marital requirement. However, Tarman’s financial contribution went far beyond traditional norms. Despite initial resistance from the bride’s family regarding the extreme age disparity, the young woman eventually accepted the proposal under specific financial conditions.

To seal the agreement, Tarman presented a cheque during the ceremony equivalent to approximately 1.8 crore BDT (calculated from the initial 1.6 crore Indian Rupees). This amount was reportedly significantly higher than the sum originally negotiated between the families. When factoring in the lavish wedding celebrations, catering, and luxurious gifts, the total expenditure is confirmed to have exceeded the 2 crore BDT mark.

A Scandalous Departure and Allegations

The festivities were quickly overshadowed by an abrupt and dramatic exit. Immediately following the ceremony, the newlyweds were seen departing the venue on a motorcycle. Shortly after their departure, the wedding photographers and event vendors raised an alarm, alleging that Tarman had “fled” without settling his outstanding professional fees.
