Measles Symptoms Claim Eight More Children’s Lives

Eight more children have died with symptoms of measles across Bangladesh in the past 24 hours, while 1,086 children have been affected by measles and its associated symptoms during the same period, according to the reported figures.

The latest figures cover the 24 hours from 8am on Friday to 8am on Saturday, highlighting continued concern over the impact of the disease on children across the country.

Since 15 March, a total of 1,051 children have died with measles symptoms nationwide. Separately, 104 deaths have been confirmed as caused by measles, according to the report.

The figures indicate a combined total of 1,155 deaths associated with measles and its symptoms. However, deaths involving suspected measles symptoms and those confirmed to have been caused by the virus are reported separately. Not every death involving measles-like symptoms can be attributed conclusively to the disease without appropriate medical assessment.

Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads primarily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Common symptoms include fever, a runny nose, coughing, red or watery eyes and a rash that typically develops several days after the initial symptoms.

Although many children recover from measles, the infection can lead to serious complications, particularly among those who are malnourished, have weakened immune systems or do not receive timely medical care. Potential complications include pneumonia, severe dehydration and inflammation of the brain.

Vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to prevent measles and reduce the risk of severe illness. Early identification of suspected cases, appropriate medical care and efforts to ensure children receive recommended vaccinations are also important in controlling transmission.

Parents and caregivers should seek medical advice if a child develops a fever accompanied by a rash or other symptoms consistent with measles. Immediate medical attention is particularly important if the child experiences breathing difficulties, seizures, unusual drowsiness or an inability to drink or feed properly.

The latest figures underline the continuing pressure that measles and suspected measles cases are placing on child health in Bangladesh. A clearer assessment of the outbreak would require further information, including laboratory-confirmed cases, age-specific data, vaccination coverage and details of the circumstances surrounding reported deaths.
