The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have filed 1,502 cases for traffic rule violations

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have intensified their campaign to enforce traffic laws across the capital, filing a total of 1,502 cases against motorists for various violations. The drive forms part of a wider effort to restore discipline on Dhaka’s chronically congested roads and improve overall road safety.

According to an official press release issued on Sunday, 25 January, by the DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, the cases were recorded during a citywide traffic operation conducted on Saturday, 24 January. Traffic officers from all divisions of the DMP were deployed at key intersections and busy corridors to identify and penalise breaches of traffic regulations.

DMP traffic sources said that the violations involved a wide range of vehicles, including buses, trucks, covered vans, CNG-powered auto-rickshaws and motorcycles. Motorcycles accounted for a particularly large share of the cases, reflecting growing concerns among authorities over reckless riding, non-compliance with helmet rules, and frequent lane violations.

The Mirpur Traffic Division registered the highest number of cases, highlighting the pressure on roads in the northern part of the city, where population density and vehicle numbers have increased sharply in recent years. Motijheel, one of Dhaka’s main commercial hubs, also recorded a significant number of violations, underlining the daily strain caused by office-hour traffic.

In addition to filing cases, the traffic operation resulted in the impounding of vehicles that were found to be illegally parked or unfit for road use. A total of 362 vehicles were dumped, while 150 vehicles were seized using wreckers during the operation.

Senior DMP officials stated that such enforcement drives are essential to curb indiscipline, reduce accidents, and ensure smoother movement for law-abiding commuters. They also urged drivers to comply with traffic laws, maintain valid documents, and follow lane discipline to avoid penalties and contribute to safer roads.

The DMP reiterated that similar operations would continue across the metropolitan area in the coming days as part of a sustained strategy to improve traffic management in Dhaka.
