In a startling administrative lapse, three individuals accused in a murder case were mistakenly released from Mymensingh Central Jail, prompting immediate disciplinary action and the formation of a high-level investigation committee. The incident has raised concerns over procedural oversight within the country’s prison system.
The released suspects have been identified as:
Anis Mia
Rashedul
Md. Zakirul
They were all implicated in a murder case registered in Tarakanda Upazila. According to prison sources, the three were released on Tuesday afternoon without bail, though the matter only became public on Thursday.
Following the incident, Deputy Jailer Zakaria Imtiaz was provisionally suspended, pending investigation. The Department of Prisons immediately constituted a three-member inquiry committee, led by DIG Prisons, Dhaka Division-2, Tipu Sultan. The committee has been instructed to submit a detailed report within three working days.
Confirming the incident, Senior Jail Superintendent Aminul Islam stated, “One of the prison officials inadvertently released the inmates. It was an unintentional error.”
DIG Prisons of Mymensingh Division, Mohammad Touhidul Islam, elaborated on the administrative oversight, explaining that the release occurred due to a misinterpretation of the production warrant. “The deputy jailer mistakenly treated the production warrant as a bail order, resulting in the inadvertent release of the three suspects,” he said. “The inquiry committee has commenced its investigation to determine the root cause of this lapse. Any officials found responsible will face appropriate disciplinary measures.”
The release has highlighted significant procedural vulnerabilities in the handling of legal documentation within the prison system, prompting authorities to review internal safeguards. Steps are now being considered to prevent similar errors in the future, including staff retraining and stricter verification processes for inmate releases.
A summary of the incident is presented below:

This incident has drawn nationwide attention and underscores the need for meticulous procedural compliance in the management of prisoners, especially those implicated in serious crimes.
