ASI found hanging in Sherpur

Sherpur authorities recovered the lifeless body of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shahinul Islam, aged 43, from his rented accommodation after breaking down the door of his bedroom. The grim discovery was made on Thursday, 29 January, at approximately 11:00 pm in a house located in the Girdanarayanpur area of Sherpur municipality.

Shahinul hailed from Tebirchar village in Ranagacha Union, Jamalpur Sadar Upazila, as the son of the late Shamsul Haque. He is survived by his wife and their only child.

According to Md. Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) in Sherpur, preliminary investigations suggest that the incident may have been a suicide linked to mental health issues.

Background and Circumstances

Sources within the police department indicate that ASI Shahinul joined Sherpur Sadar Police Station approximately seven months ago. He resided with his family in a rented house directly opposite the police station. On the day of the incident, Shahinul’s wife, Maksuda Parvin, had travelled to their ancestral village with their child at around 11:00 am. Shahinul returned home at approximately 2:00 pm after completing his duty, but was unable to reach his wife by phone.

When his relatives returned to the house in the evening, they found the bedroom door locked from the inside. Despite repeated knocking, Shahinul did not respond. With the help of family members, they forced open the door and found him hanging from a ceiling fan using a scarf.

Police, along with Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md. Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan and Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Nasrin Akter, promptly visited the scene. Shahinul was then taken to Sherpur Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty medical team officially declared him dead. Legal procedures are currently underway.

Family and Colleague Statements

Shahinul’s wife, Maksuda Begum, stated that her husband had been experiencing mild mental health issues and regularly consulted a psychiatrist while taking prescribed medications.

Inspector (Investigation) Mohammad Jahangir Alam of Sadar Police Station remarked that Shahinul had never outwardly displayed signs of severe mental instability and described the incident as “extremely tragic.”
