A brutal act of domestic violence has shocked the community of Netrokona after a local politician allegedly stabbed his wife in the face for opposing his second marriage. The victim, identified as Sony Akter, 35, is currently undergoing treatment at the Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH) following the assault, which occurred in the village of Barkashia in Mohanganj Upazila on Wednesday (28 January).
The accused, Abdullah al-Mamun, widely known as Mohammad Sohag Mia, 40, is a member of the Upazila Jubo League. According to local sources and the formal complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, Golam Morshed, the couple married in 2010 and have three children together—two sons and a daughter. Sony Akter, a resilient mother of three, serves as an assistant teacher at a local school for children with disabilities.
The domestic harmony was shattered when Sohag Mia entered into a second marriage without his first wife’s consent—a violation of both social norms and the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance of Bangladesh, which requires written permission from the first wife for polygamy.

Tensions escalated recently when Sohag brought his second wife into the family home. In an attempt to escape the abuse, Sony moved to a separate residence in Mohanganj town. The couple eventually agreed to a formal divorce. However, the situation turned violent during the meeting intended for signing the legal documents.
Witnesses claim that Sohag attacked Sony at the meeting venue, strangling her with her scarf before forcibly dragging her into a rickshaw to his ancestral home in Barkashia. It was there that he allegedly subjected her to a severe beating and used a knife to slash her face. When Sony’s brother, Golam Morshed, arrived to intervene, he was reportedly assaulted with an iron rod.
Sony Akter, speaking from her hospital bed, expressed the terror of the ordeal: “I only survived because the police arrived in time to rescue me. He would have killed me otherwise.”
In his defence, Sohag Mia has dismissed the allegations as entirely fabricated, claiming he has had no contact with Sony for six years and alleging that she has previously extorted money from him through legal cases.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohanganj Police Station, Mohammad Hafizul Islam Harun, confirmed on Friday that a written complaint has been received. “We are investigating the matter thoroughly and will take appropriate legal action based on our findings,” he stated.
