In a chilling incident in Meherpur’s Gangni Upazila, police discovered two improvised explosive devices and a threatening note demanding a hefty ransom outside the residence of a Bangladeshi expatriate. The note demanded 150,000 taka and warned of dire consequences, including threats to life and property, if the sum was not paid.
The note read:
“Respected uncle, greetings. We hope you are well. Your building has turned out very nice, must have cost a lot of money, right? Since you did not offer sweets to the senior local figures, we have sent special sweets. To eat our sweets, you must send 150,000 taka to this number. Otherwise, you will lose both your son and your building.”
Local sources and police reports confirmed that Mithun Hossain, a resident of Sahagolpur village and a Singapore-based expatriate, is currently constructing a house in his native village. In the early hours of Sunday, family members discovered the note along with two crude explosive devices, commonly referred to as “cocktails,” at the main gate of the property. They immediately informed the authorities.
A team from the Dhala Police Camp under Gangni Police Station promptly responded to the alert. The explosives, each carefully wrapped in red tape, along with the handwritten note, were safely retrieved. For security reasons, the devices were placed in water- and sand-filled containers before being transported to the police station for further investigation.
Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Uttam Kumar Das, confirmed that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness. He stated that a specialised police team is actively working to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
