A grim domestic tragedy has shaken the Kharkhari area under Rajshahi’s Chandrima police station, where a 55-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her drug-dependent son following a dispute over money. Police recovered the body at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday night (31 January), after residents alerted the authorities to a violent incident on a neighbourhood street.
The victim, identified as Sohagi Khatun, was the wife of Azizul Islam and a long-time resident of the locality. According to preliminary accounts gathered by police and neighbours, the suspect—her son, Md Suman—had for years been known in the area for unruly behaviour and substance abuse. On the night of the incident, he reportedly demanded money from his mother to purchase drugs. When she refused, an argument escalated rapidly into violence.
Witnesses said that in a fit of rage the young man seized a sharp weapon and attacked his mother inside or near their home. She sustained severe injuries and collapsed at the scene, dying shortly afterwards. In an apparent attempt to evade responsibility, the suspect is said to have dragged or left the body on the road and tried to flee. However, alert neighbours intervened, restrained him, and informed the police. Officers from Chandrima police station arrived promptly, took the suspect into custody, and recovered the body.
The Officer-in-Charge of Chandrima police station, Monirul Islam, confirmed that the deceased would be sent to the Rajshahi Medical College morgue for a post-mortem examination to establish the precise cause of death and to collect forensic evidence. He added that a murder case would be filed and that the investigation would proceed in accordance with the law, including questioning the suspect and recording statements from witnesses.
Residents described the episode as a devastating reminder of how drug dependency can corrode family relationships and spill over into lethal violence. Community members said the family had struggled for some time with the son’s behaviour, and that efforts to restrain or reform him had failed. Local leaders and social workers, speaking in the aftermath, urged stronger community-level interventions, counselling, and rehabilitation programmes to prevent similar tragedies, stressing that addiction is not only a personal crisis but also a public safety concern.
While the investigation is ongoing, police have indicated that they are working to recover the alleged weapon and to reconstruct the sequence of events through forensic findings and eyewitness testimony. The case has sent shockwaves through the neighbourhood, with many residents gathering in quiet mourning for a woman described as soft-spoken and devoted to her family.
