In a shocking incident in Kapasia Upazila, Gazipur, Helal Uddin, 55, a former leader of the Nationalist Farmers’ Party, succumbed to injuries sustained in a violent attack. Helal, who previously served as the organisational secretary of the Kapasia Upazila Farmers’ Party, was pronounced dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 10:00 am on Sunday.
The assault occurred late on Saturday night in Kotbajalia, Chandpur Union, as Helal was returning home. Local sources report that a group of four to five unidentified assailants attacked him from behind, wielding crude weapons including sharp implements. The attackers fled the scene after inflicting severe injuries to his back.
According to family members, Helal was immediately rushed to the Kapasia Upazila Health Complex by nearby residents. Following initial treatment, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced care, but doctors were unable to save him.
Fakir Iskandar Alam, Secretary of the Gazipur District branch of the Nationalist Farmers’ Party, described the killing as “extremely tragic and condemnable,” adding that Helal was a dedicated and selfless leader who devoted his life to the welfare of farmers in the region.
Shahinur Alam, Officer-in-Charge of Kapasia Police Station, confirmed that the attack might be linked to a dispute the previous day between Helal’s nephew and an unknown party over a mobile phone theft. Investigations are currently underway.
