In a brutal escalation of a longstanding land dispute, a 50-year-old woman, Nahida Begum, was fatally assaulted with a hammer in Tangail’s Patgati Madhopara area, Gopalganj, on Sunday night. Her son, Mohibullah Osta, sustained injuries during the attack.
The incident occurred around 9:30 pm when Mohibullah, a second-year undergraduate student at Tangail Government College, was reportedly confronted at his home by a group of individuals led by the son of a neighbouring resident, Kader Osta. The group forcefully broke into the house and began assaulting Mohibullah. When Nahida attempted to protect her son, she was struck repeatedly with a hammer, suffering severe injuries.
She was immediately rushed to Gopalganj 250-Bed General Hospital, but doctors declared her dead on arrival. According to Dr. Manjurul Kabir of the hospital, Nahida bore multiple trauma injuries, including severe head wounds. Mohibullah was admitted to Gopalganj Medical College Hospital and is currently receiving treatment.
The attack is reportedly the culmination of a protracted land dispute between Nahida’s husband, the late Shariful Osta, and Kader Osta. Arman Osta, Nahida’s nephew, explained that tensions had been ongoing for years and had escalated into violence on Sunday night.
Tangail police have visited the crime scene and are investigating. Officer-in-Charge Ayub Ali stated that no formal case has yet been filed, as the victim’s son remains hospitalised. The local area is reportedly calm following the incident.
The tragic event underscores the risks of unresolved local disputes escalating into violence, with devastating consequences for families and communities.
