Twelve police officers sustained injuries during a midnight gunfight with a gang of extortionists and violent criminals in Chittagong’s Raozan upazila. The violent clash unfolded at approximately 10:40 pm on Wednesday in the Jainagar Barua Para area under the South Kadalpur Ward of Kadalpur Union. Officers managed to arrest one suspect, identified as 37-year-old Dildar Hossain, who suffered gunshot wounds during the encounter.
Providing details at a press conference on Thursday afternoon at the District Superintendent of Police’s office, Superintendent of Police (SP) Masud Alam disclosed that the raid targeted a notorious gang operating under the leadership of Jane Alam, commonly known as Dakat Alam, and Mohammad Aziz, alias Aziz Boss.
According to police sources, the criminal syndicate had been terrorising local residents and commercial establishments through systemic extortion and intimidation. The immediate trigger for the operation was a recent incident on 25 September, when gang members trespassed into the home of a local resident, Abu Bakkar Chowdhury, and demanded a substantial sum in extortion money. Following preliminary verification of the complaint, a specialised police team launched the late-night operation to apprehend the ringleaders and their accomplices.
Upon sensing the presence of law enforcement officers in the vicinity, the armed gang opened fire indiscriminately. Forces on the ground responded in self-defence, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire between both sides. Twelve police personnel received various injuries amidst the violent confrontation. As the remaining members of the syndicate managed to flee the scene under cover of darkness, police apprehended the injured Dildar Hossain.
Subsequent interrogations of Dildar led to the recovery of several firearms, live ammunition, and sharp domestic weapons hidden in nearby locations. SP Masud Alam confirmed that preliminary investigations firmly link the arrested suspect and his absconding associates to organised violent crime, illegal arms trafficking, and repeated acts of intimidation in the region.
This raid follows a separate anti-crime sweep late on Tuesday night, during which police detained three suspects in Kadalpur while they were reportedly preparing to commit a robbery. Law enforcement authorities recovered firearms during that action and have registered two separate cases under the Arms Act and regulations governing planned robbery. Police operations in Raozan remain ongoing as forces track down the fleeing suspects.
