Tarique Rahman Holds Massive Rally in Barisal

In a significant moment for Bangladesh’s political landscape, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman arrived in Barisal today, Wednesday, as part of his ongoing election campaign. Marking his first visit in nearly two decades, Rahman’s arrival drew large crowds of party leaders and activists from across the division, who began gathering at the historic Bels Park on Band Road from the early hours.

The highly anticipated rally is scheduled to commence at 12:00 PM, where Tarique Rahman will deliver a keynote address. Leaders and candidates representing BNP and its allied parties from all 21 constituencies of Barisal Division are expected to participate.

Preparations for the event began yesterday evening, with party members travelling from various districts and upazilas to reach Barisal ahead of the rally. Nurul Islam (Roni), General Secretary of Barisal’s Barguna District Chhatra Dal, stated, “Many of our activists arrived last night. Early this morning, additional supporters departed for the rally to ensure full participation.”

Among those attending were two female activists, Nasima Begum and Kakoli Akter, from Jahangirnagar Union in Babuganj Upazila. They arrived in Barisal last night and stayed with relatives. Nasima Begum said, “After offering the Fajr prayer, we came to the field. We have no personal demands; we only wish to see our country prosper.”

The venue has been meticulously prepared. A large stage has been erected at the eastern end of the park, with a separate seating area for women activists made of bamboo. The city and rally grounds are adorned with banners, festoons, and decorative arches, reflecting the festival-like atmosphere.

This is the first major rally at Bels Park since former Prime Minister and BNP leader Khaleda Zia addressed supporters here in 2008, making Tarique Rahman’s visit a historic occasion. He last visited Barisal on 14 May 2006, further emphasising the significance of today’s gathering.
