Tragic Fall Ends Young Man’s Life in Love Dispute

A young man in Dhaka lost his life after falling from a rooftop following a love-related dispute. The deceased, 25-year-old Shahidul Islam, originally hailed from South Majpara village in Dhobaura, Mymensingh district, and was the son of Chan Mia. At the time of the incident, he was living in Kathalbagan, Dhaka, with his elder brother, Rafiqul Islam.

According to Sub-Inspector Ariful Islam of Kalabagan Police Station, Shahidul had developed a romantic relationship with a 14-year-old girl from Narayanganj named Hasi. On 11 February, the couple ran away from Narayanganj to Dhaka and took shelter at Shahidul’s brother’s residence. Subsequently, with mutual consent, Shahidul’s elder brother began arrangements for their marriage.

Upon learning of the planned marriage, the girl’s family reportedly gathered below the house. When Shahidul descended the stairs and noticed their presence, he was pursued by a relative he referred to as his “khalu shoshur” (uncle-in-law). In an attempt to evade confrontation, Shahidul reportedly tried to climb upwards via the staircase but inadvertently jumped to an adjacent building. Tragically, he fell from the rooftop, resulting in fatal injuries.

Police recovered Shahidul’s body at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, and it was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue on Sunday morning. After completion of post-mortem procedures, the body will be handed over to the family.

Sub-Inspector Ariful Islam further stated that the romantic relationship between Shahidul and Hasi had developed primarily through social media, particularly Facebook. Given Hasi’s minor age, authorities returned her to her family following proper legal procedures.

The incident has left both local authorities and the families involved in deep grief. It has also sparked wider discussions regarding the social and legal implications of underage relationships, elopements, and the responsibilities of guardians in such matters.
