A case filed against Soham over loan default allegations

As the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections approach, actor and legislator Soham Chakraborty has found himself embroiled in a fresh controversy. Actor-politician Shahid Imam has filed a case against Soham in the High Court, alleging default on a personal loan.

According to the complaint, in 2021, Soham borrowed ₹68 lakh from Shahid based on a personal understanding. The complainant claims that only ₹25 lakh of the loaned sum has been repaid so far, leaving an outstanding balance of ₹43 lakh.

Shahid Imam stated that repeated attempts to recover the remaining amount over the past two years were unsuccessful. He further alleged that when he sought repayment, he faced undue pressure and threats, prompting him to approach the legal system.

“After waiting for two years, I was compelled to file a case against Soham on Monday. On Tuesday, I submitted a formal written complaint to Charu Market Police Station,” Shahid said.

On the other hand, Soham Chakraborty has neither denied taking the loan nor refused to repay it. He explained that the funds were borrowed for the production of a film and that financial difficulties, along with delays in the movie’s release, prevented him from repaying the entire sum at once.

Soham claimed that he has repeatedly assured Shahid of settling the remaining ₹43 lakh. He categorically dismissed the allegations of threats, suggesting that the matter has been publicised to tarnish his reputation ahead of the elections.

The case is now under judicial consideration, with formal legal proceedings underway. Authorities at Charu Market Police Station confirmed receipt of the written complaint, and further investigation is expected.

This controversy has drawn considerable attention given Soham’s dual role as a prominent actor and elected representative. Observers suggest that the timing of the allegations, so close to the state elections, may have political implications. Meanwhile, both parties maintain their positions—Soham acknowledging the debt but citing repayment challenges, and Shahid emphasising legal recourse to recover the remaining amount.

As the matter progresses through the courts, it remains to be seen how the case will impact Soham’s public image and electoral prospects in West Bengal.
