Prime Minister to Confer Ekushey Padak, Launch Book Fair

On 26 February, Bangladesh will witness the simultaneous celebration of two landmark cultural and educational events, underscoring the nation’s commitment to recognising excellence and promoting literary pursuits. The day will see the prestigious Ekushey Padak awards presented to distinguished individuals, while the Amar Ekushey Book Fair will be formally inaugurated at the Bangladesh Academy premises in Dhaka.

Prime Minister Tarek Rahman is set to personally confer the Ekushey Padak to eminent scholars, writers, journalists, artists, scientists, and social activists in recognition of their outstanding contributions across various fields. Later in the day, he will inaugurate the Amar Ekushey Book Fair, marking the beginning of one of the country’s most anticipated literary celebrations.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, 21 February, Minister of Culture Nitai Roy Chowdhury highlighted the significance of the events, saying, “The Ekushey Padak award ceremony and the book fair inauguration have been meticulously prepared, reflecting their cultural and political importance. Both events will run from morning to evening, celebrating the nation’s intellectual and artistic achievements.”

The Ekushey Padak, widely regarded as Bangladesh’s highest secular state honour, recognises individuals whose contributions have had a profound impact on education, literature, science, culture, and the arts. Meanwhile, the Amar Ekushey Book Fair provides a vital platform connecting authors, publishers, and readers, stimulating the country’s publishing industry and fostering literary engagement.

The schedule for the two events is as follows:

Event Date & Time Venue Chief Guest
Ekushey Padak Presentation 26 February, 10:00 AM Government Hall, Dhaka Prime Minister Tarek Rahman
Amar Ekushey Book Fair Inauguration 26 February, 4:00 PM Bangladesh Academy Grounds Prime Minister Tarek Rahman

Minister Chowdhury further assured that comprehensive security and administrative arrangements have been put in place for both events. Additionally, convenient transportation and entry arrangements have been organised for book fair attendees to ensure a smooth and accessible experience.

Participants, including writers, artists, and publishers, expressed optimism that this year’s book fair will once again illuminate the literary landscape, enriching the nation’s cultural environment and inspiring readers across generations.

From morning to evening, 26 February promises to be a day of enduring cultural significance in Bangladesh, offering a memorable experience for scholars, students, readers, and the general public alike. These twin celebrations will not only honour excellence but also reinforce the country’s enduring commitment to literature, education, and the arts.
