Mohiuddin Replaced: Aminul Becomes New Chief Prosecutor

Mohammad Tajul Islam has been removed from his position as Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal. In his place, lawyer Mohammad Aminul Islam has been appointed as the new Chief Prosecutor, according to a notification issued today, Monday, by the Solicitor Sub-division of the Law and Justice Division under the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

The official notification states that Mohammad Tajul Islam’s appointment as Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal has been cancelled. Until a formal reappointment is issued for the management of tribunal cases, lawyer Aminul Islam has been assigned the role of Chief Prosecutor. He will receive the rank, salary, allowances, and other benefits equivalent to those of the Attorney General. The order is effective immediately.

Aminul Islam is a practising lawyer at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. He has previously served as a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum and also held the position of Joint Vice-President within the forum. His extensive legal experience and leadership in the lawyers’ community are seen as significant assets for his new role in overseeing high-profile tribunal cases.

Tajul Islam had been appointed Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal on 5 September 2024 by the then caretaker government. However, following the formation of the BNP-led government after the Thirteenth National Parliament elections, his appointment has been revoked, and Aminul Islam has been instated as the new Chief Prosecutor.

For clarity, the recent changes in the tribunal’s leadership are summarised below:
