Extended Eid Holidays Offer Up to Ten Days Off

Government employees in Bangladesh are set to enjoy an extended period of holidays during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations, with the potential for continuous leave stretching from seven to ten days.

According to the official government holiday schedule for 2026, Eid-ul-Fitr is expected to be observed on Saturday, 21 March, depending on the sighting of the moon. The government has formally declared a five-day public holiday for Eid celebrations.

Under the announced schedule, the official holidays will run from Thursday, 19 March to Monday, 23 March. However, employees can extend their break: by taking leave on Wednesday, 18 March, which is not officially a public holiday but falls after the observance of Shab-e-Qadr on 17 March, government staff can enjoy a continuous seven-day holiday.

The holiday season becomes even longer as it coincides with Independence Day on Thursday, 26 March, followed by the regular weekend on 27–28 March. Employees who also choose to take annual leave on Tuesday, 24 March and Wednesday, 25 March could potentially enjoy a ten-day continuous break.

This extended holiday arrangement presents a rare opportunity for government workers to plan long family trips, domestic travel, or other leisure activities during a single festive period.

For clarity, the official and potential extended holidays are summarised below:

Date Day Occasion / Holiday Type of Holiday
17 March 2026 Tuesday Shab-e-Qadr Official Public Holiday
18 March 2026 Wednesday Optional Leave Extend Eid Holiday
19 March 2026 Thursday Eid Holiday Official Public Holiday
20 March 2026 Friday Eid Holiday Official Public Holiday
21 March 2026 Saturday Eid-ul-Fitr Official Public Holiday
22 March 2026 Sunday Eid Holiday Official Public Holiday
23 March 2026 Monday Eid Holiday Official Public Holiday
24–25 March 2026 Tuesday–Wednesday Optional Leave Extend Eid Holiday
26 March 2026 Thursday Independence Day Official Public Holiday
27–28 March 2026 Friday–Saturday Weekend Regular Holiday

With careful planning, government employees can transform the standard five-day Eid break into an uninterrupted ten-day festive period, making 2026 one of the most generous holiday spans in recent years.
