Inter Miami have qualified for the Major League Soccer (MLS) play-offs for the third consecutive season after defeating New York City FC 2-0 at home. Although Lionel Messi did not score, the Argentine captain played a crucial role in the victory, providing an excellent assist for Rodrigo De Paul’s goal.
Miami made a strong start to Thursday morning’s match, taking the lead in the 20th minute through Germán Berterame. The hosts continued to push forward in search of a second goal and extended their advantage in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time.
De Paul found the net after receiving a superb assist from Messi, giving Miami a comfortable 2-0 lead before the interval.
New York City FC attempted to reduce the deficit after the break, launching several attacks in an effort to get back into the contest. However, Miami’s defence remained organised, while goalkeeper Dayne St Clair delivered an outstanding performance to preserve the clean sheet.
St Clair made four crucial saves in the closing stages, including a penalty stop. Despite recording 14 shots during the match, New York City FC failed to score as Miami held on to their two-goal advantage until the final whistle.
Messi Remains a Key Figure in Miami’s Campaign
Although he was unable to add to his goal tally against New York City FC, Messi continues to enjoy an impressive season in the MLS.
The Argentine forward has scored 23 goals and provided 14 assists in the league so far. His ability to finish chances and create opportunities for teammates has made him a central figure in Miami’s attacking play.
Messi is also among the leading contenders for a third consecutive MLS Most Valuable Player award. He remains firmly in contention for the Golden Boot, further highlighting his influence on the team’s performances this season.
His assist for De Paul’s goal demonstrated that his contribution extends beyond scoring. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star continues to create opportunities, link up with teammates and influence matches through his vision and creativity.
Miami Aim to Defend Their MLS Cup Title
Inter Miami won the MLS Cup last season and will now seek to defend their title in the upcoming play-offs. Reaching the knockout stage for a third successive year underlines the club’s continued competitiveness.
However, success in the regular season does not guarantee a championship. The play-offs demand consistency, strong defensive organisation and the ability to perform under pressure, making contributions from across the squad particularly important.
St Clair’s performance against New York City FC will provide encouragement as Miami prepare for the next stage of their campaign. Alongside Messi’s attacking influence and De Paul’s contribution in midfield, the goalkeeper’s reliability could prove valuable in the knockout rounds.
The MLS play-offs are scheduled to begin on 18 November. Miami will hope to carry their current momentum into the competition and build another successful title campaign.
With Messi leading the attack and key players contributing at both ends of the pitch, the defending champions will be determined to maintain their form and strengthen their bid for another MLS Cup triumph.
