Attack and Vandalism at NGO Office in Bogura Over Loan Payment Dispute

A violent attack and vandalism have been reported at the office of an NGO named ‘Uddipan’ in Bogura, which occurred in connection with a loan payment dispute. Two employees were injured in the attack, which involved blunt objects and sharp weapons. Additionally, approximately one and a half lakh taka was allegedly stolen from the office.

The incident took place on the night of Saturday, 28th February, at the NGO’s office located near the Fultola Paat Beejagar in Ward 13 of Bogura municipality.

The injured staff members have been identified as Program Officer Hasinur Rahman (34) and First Credit Officer Shimul Ali (27). According to Rajia Sultana, another First Credit Officer at Uddipan, two to three individuals suddenly entered the office, attacking the staff with a hammer and a knife. They also damaged the office’s computers, chairs, and tables before making off with an estimated 150,000 taka in cash.

Rajia further explained that the violence was triggered by a loan dispute. In November of the previous year, Mahmudah Rahman, the wife of Noor Islam Nahid from the Khandar area, had borrowed two lakh taka from the NGO. However, she had failed to repay any instalments, despite repeated reminders. On the afternoon of the attack, an NGO employee was allegedly assaulted while attempting to discuss the overdue loan. Later that night, the office was reportedly targeted in a planned assault.

Attempts to contact Noor Islam and his wife for their version of events were unsuccessful, as their mobile phones were found to be switched off.

Regarding the incident, Touhidul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahjahanpur Police Station, confirmed that a case has been filed, and investigations are ongoing. However, no arrests have been made as of yet. He assured the public that necessary legal actions will be taken once the investigation is completed.

The attack has raised concerns over the safety of NGO workers, especially those involved in loan recovery and financial transactions. The incident also highlights the growing tensions surrounding unpaid loans in rural areas, with some resorting to violence in response to financial disputes. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the investigation unfolds.
