Seven Remanded in Narsingdi Rape-Murder Case

In a harrowing development in Narsingdi, the court has granted an eight-day remand for seven individuals, including the prime accused, Nur Mohammad Nura, in connection with the brutal gang rape and murder of a teenage girl. The victim was reportedly abducted by the perpetrators after demanding justice for a previous sexual assault.

The order was delivered on Sunday, 1 March, by Judicial Magistrate (Second) Md. Mehedi Hasan at Madhabdi Court. According to court sources, the investigation officer requested a ten-day remand for each of the seven arrested suspects, following which the court approved an eight-day period for further interrogation.

No legal representatives appeared for the accused during the hearing.

Inspector (Investigation) Md. Omar Kaiyum of Madhabdi Police Station, leading the probe, stated that four individuals were directly involved in the rape, while three others—including a former village council member—assisted in covering up the crime. Following their arrests, a ten-day remand was sought, with the court approving eight days. Two other suspects remain at large and are being actively pursued by authorities.

Abdul Mannan Bhuiya, President of the Narsingdi District Bar Association, emphasised that, following the association’s decision, no lawyers would represent the accused; instead, full support would be provided to the prosecution. He expressed optimism that the case could reach completion within six months, provided the police submit a comprehensive charge sheet, and confirmed that the maximum punishment—capital punishment—would likely be imposed.

The victim’s mother had lodged a case with Madhabdi Police, naming nine individuals, including Nur Mohammad Nura as the principal perpetrator. The tragedy unfolded on 25 February, when Nura and his accomplices reportedly forced the girl’s father at knifepoint to hand her over. She was subsequently gang-raped, strangled, and her body abandoned in a mustard field.
