Diesel Shipment Arrives Through India Pipeline

Bangladesh is set to receive 5,000 metric tonnes of diesel from India through a cross-border pipeline on Tuesday, as authorities move to maintain stable fuel reserves and ensure uninterrupted energy supply across the country.

The diesel is being supplied from the Numaligarh Refinery in Assam, India, and is expected to reach Bangladesh through the India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline. Officials from the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation confirmed that pumping operations have already commenced from the Indian side.

Muhammad Morshed Hossain Azad, General Manager of the Commercial and Operations Division of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation, confirmed that the shipment is part of a broader effort to stabilise the country’s fuel supply. He stated that the pipeline transport system significantly reduces both transportation costs and delivery time compared with traditional tanker shipments.

According to officials familiar with the operation, the government has prioritised the import to maintain adequate fuel reserves and avoid potential supply disruptions. Diesel remains a crucial energy resource in Bangladesh, widely used in power generation, industrial production, agriculture, and transportation.

Diesel Shipment Details

Item Information
Fuel type Diesel
Quantity 5,000 metric tonnes
Source Numaligarh Refinery, Assam, India
Delivery method India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline
Expected arrival 10 March
Purpose Maintain fuel reserves and ensure stable supply

Energy sector officials noted that pipeline transportation has become an increasingly important component of Bangladesh’s fuel import strategy. Previously, most imported diesel was transported by sea and river tankers, which involved longer delivery times and higher logistics costs. The pipeline system allows fuel to move directly between the two countries, improving efficiency and reducing the risk of supply interruptions.

Bilateral Energy Cooperation

The latest diesel shipment follows recent discussions between senior officials of Bangladesh and India aimed at strengthening energy cooperation. On Sunday, Bangladesh’s Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury held a meeting in Dhaka with Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma to address fuel supply issues and explore mechanisms to ensure long-term energy stability.

During the meeting, Bangladesh formally proposed receiving an additional 50,000 metric tonnes of diesel over the next four months through the cross-border pipeline. The proposal reflects the government’s effort to secure reliable energy supplies while managing fluctuations in global fuel markets.

Energy analysts say such bilateral arrangements are increasingly important as Bangladesh continues to experience growing demand for fuel due to expanding industrial activity and rising electricity consumption. Ensuring steady diesel imports is particularly critical during periods of high energy demand.

Strategic Importance

The arrival of the first 5,000-tonne consignment is widely viewed as an initial step in implementing the proposed additional supply agreement. Officials believe the pipeline will play a key role in strengthening Bangladesh’s fuel security by providing a faster and more reliable supply route.

Government authorities have reiterated that maintaining adequate energy reserves remains a priority in order to support economic activity, safeguard agricultural operations, and sustain uninterrupted electricity production across the country.

With pumping operations already underway, the diesel shipment is expected to reach Bangladesh shortly, reinforcing the growing importance of regional cooperation in addressing energy needs and ensuring stability in the national fuel supply chain.
