A tense confrontation unfolded on Tuesday afternoon when a citizen publicly challenged Asif Mahmud, former advisor to the outgoing caretaker government and spokesperson of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), over alleged irregularities in flood relief funds. The man, identifying himself as a “July activist,” demanded a clear account of the money disbursed during previous flood relief efforts.
The incident occurred outside a press conference organised by the NCP to announce the party’s upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations. A video of the exchange has since gone viral on social media.
The Confrontation
According to witnesses, the activist approached Asif Mahmud as he addressed reporters and began questioning him directly:
“Where is the money that was allocated for the floods? These funds were given to the relevant authorities—can we now access a full account? Where has the flood relief money gone?”
The spokesperson did not provide an immediate response, and tensions escalated as bystanders attempted to intervene. When journalists asked the protester to identify himself, he declared he was a “July activist,” referring to his involvement in the pro-democracy movement of July 2015.
During the confrontation, the activist repeatedly referred to Asif Mahmud as a “terrorist” and a “mobster,” adding:
“He rides in luxury cars worth millions—where does this money come from? Why has he never checked on the July activists who helped during those floods?”
The verbal altercation continued briefly before party aides escorted the individual away from the conference area.
NCP Eid Celebrations
Despite the disruption, the press conference proceeded with Asif Mahmud outlining the NCP’s plans for the upcoming Eid festival in Dhaka. The celebrations are scheduled to span three days, featuring traditional processions and cultural performances.
To manage the event, the NCP has formed a main implementation committee and a sub-committee tasked with operational activities. Organisers have encouraged public financial contributions and invited young volunteers to participate in organising the festivities.
