Indian pacer Arshdeep Singh has been fined 15% of his match fee for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the World Cup final against New Zealand. The incident occurred last Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where Singh was found guilty of a Level 1 offence under the ICC regulations.
According to an official statement from the International Cricket Council (ICC), Singh violated Article 2.9 of the Code of Conduct. This article pertains to the dangerous or inappropriate throwing of the ball or any cricket equipment towards, or in the vicinity of, another player during an international match. The specific incident took place during the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings. After bowling, Singh threw the ball aggressively while fielding, which struck Kiwi batter Daryl Mitchell on the pads.
The ICC clarified that this was a first offence for Singh in the past 24 months. As a result, the disciplinary measures included a fine amounting to 15% of his match fee and one demerit point on his conduct record. Since Singh accepted the sanction proposed by the ICC Elite Panel match referee Andy Pycroft, there was no requirement for a formal hearing.
This incident underscores the ICC’s commitment to upholding sportsmanship standards, even at the highest levels of international cricket. While Singh’s aggressive gesture was brief, it drew attention due to the high stakes of a World Cup final and the global audience.
| Player | Offence Date | Match/Event | Level of Offence | Penalty | Demerit Points | Prior Offences (24 Months) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arshdeep Singh | 5 March 2026 | World Cup Final vs New Zealand | Level 1 | 15% match fee fine | 1 | 0 |
The ICC’s disciplinary framework categorises offences into levels, with Level 1 covering minor breaches such as inappropriate conduct on the field. Repeated infractions or more severe misconduct can lead to stricter penalties, including higher fines and suspensions.
Despite the minor nature of the offence, Singh’s penalty serves as a reminder to all players that competitive intensity should never override respect for opponents or adherence to the rules. Cricket analysts have noted that while the action did not significantly affect the match outcome, it provided a teachable moment regarding professionalism under pressure.
