Police Advise Safety Measures for Eid Travel

With the approach of the holy festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, the police have issued comprehensive safety guidelines to ensure smooth and secure travel across the country. The advisory, released on Thursday (12 March) through a press statement, addresses road, rail, and waterway travel, emphasising precautions for both passengers and transport operators.

Authorities have urged travellers to plan their journeys well in advance and prioritise the safety of themselves and their family members. Passengers are advised not to pressure drivers into speeding and to avoid overcrowded conditions, such as travelling on the roof of buses or atop trucks, pick-ups, and other goods-carrying vehicles, which pose significant risks.

For pedestrian safety, the police recommend using zebra crossings or footbridges where available. In areas without such facilities, travellers should cross only after observing vehicle speed and traffic carefully, and seek police assistance if necessary. Passengers are also cautioned against accepting food or beverages from strangers and warned to remain vigilant against reckless driving.

Road Travel Safety Tips

For bus and vehicle drivers, the police emphasise:

Refraining from speeding and risky overtaking.

Avoiding driving when fatigued, unwell, or stressed.

Carrying all necessary documents, including a valid driving licence.

Ensuring buses are not overloaded with passengers.

Following police instructions on regional and national highways.

Waterway Safety Advisory

Passengers travelling by water are advised:

Not to board vessels such as launches, steamers, or speedboats beyond permitted passenger limits.

Avoid travelling on the deck or roof of boats.

Refrain from navigating waterways during hazardous weather.

Wear life jackets during speedboat travel.

Vessel operators are instructed to:

Ensure boats are manned by certified masters and drivers.

Suspend operations in adverse weather conditions.

Control passenger movement on deck and provide sufficient life jackets and buoys.

Check weather forecasts before departure, avoid placing luggage on passenger seats, and relocate vessels to safety in case of storms.

Maintain mobile communication and radio equipment and monitor weather bulletins regularly.

Rail Travel Precautions

Rail passengers are advised to:

Avoid riding on train roofs, buffers, or engines.

Be alert to potential stone-throwing incidents.

Keep personal belongings secure.

Travel only with valid tickets.
