The sporting community of Bangladesh is mourning the loss of Shamima Sattar Mimo, a celebrated former athlete, dedicated organiser, and recipient of the prestigious National Sports Award. She passed away last night at her residence in Dhaka after suffering a sudden heart attack, leaving a profound void in the nation’s athletic sphere.
According to family sources, Shamima Sattar Mimo had been battling heart disease and vertigo for an extended period. In recent months, her health had deteriorated significantly, affecting her mobility and cognitive recognition. Despite a brief period of recovery during which she sought to re-engage with sports activities, her comeback was tragically short-lived. Following her final wishes, her body will be taken to Dinajpur and laid to rest beside her father’s grave.
Shamima Sattar Mimo emerged as a prominent figure in Bangladeshi athletics during the post-independence era. She maintained long-term dominance in high jump at the national level and secured multiple medals in sprinting events. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to sports, she was awarded the National Sports Award in 2000.

After retiring from active competition, Mimo continued her involvement in sports as a coach, judge, and organiser. She began her administrative career as a coach at the National Sports Council and later served as the Deputy Director (Training) at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishtan (BKSP). Subsequently, she contributed to the Athletics and Archery Federations as a member and served for many years as an athletics judge.
Her passing has prompted an outpouring of grief from various sports institutions, including BKSP, the Bangladesh Cricket Board, the Athletics Federation, the Archery Federation, and numerous prominent figures in the country’s sporting fraternity. Tributes have highlighted her dedication, leadership, and the inspiration she provided to generations of athletes.
Shamima Sattar Mimo’s legacy will endure not only through her national achievements but also through her mentorship and unwavering commitment to the development of sports in Bangladesh.
